What is the Difference Between HMO, PPO and POS

It can be very hard to understand the differences of HMO, PPO and POS health care plans. There are many different kinds of plans that can be offered by South Carolina companies and employers. Before taking coverage with any kind of plan, you should take the time to research and understand all aspects of each plan that is being offered to you. The Internet along with the company that you are going to be doing health insurance business with, will be able to give you tons of information as well as a better understanding of what they plans are and what they will be able to provide.

HMO plans are probably one of the more used types of insurance plans. HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organizations and typically have the lowest out of pocket expenses for people covered under the health insurance plan. You are going to be able to choose which primary care physician you want to use, but you are going to have to have a referral to get to see a specialist if one is needed for treatment. The HMO plan is going to have a wider coverage range that can be used for the preventative care aspect of health insurance. When choosing an HMO plan, you may not have to pay a deductible and any co-payments that you have are going to be the lowest price possible.

Another type of South Carolina health insurance coverage is the PPO plan.  PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organizations. This type of plan is going to be using a wide range of health care providers that are going to be providing services to patients at rate that is discounted compared to the regular costs of service. The people that are covered under this plan are not usually told which providers to use for service, which makes it better for some people to use this health insurance plan. They will be able to choose who they want to see and use as their doctor or specialist. This plan does however, have a deductible that must be met before the insurance will kick in and begin to cover the expenses that are incurred. If you are someone using this kind of plan it is important to know that you are going to more than likely have to choose a co-insurer for the services that are not included in your plan or for a specialist. You will also have to know that you are going to be responsible for part of the costs of the service that is provided to you.

The last kind of insurance coverage offered in South Carolina is called POS. It stands for Point Of Service and combines many of the features in the two previous mentioned plans. This kind of plan is going to be providing for a primary care physician along with an even wider range of doctors. If you want to make sure that you are going to be maintaining only one certain amount to pay for the coverage or co-payment, then this the plan that is going to offer that, as it only has one flat co-payment amount. If are going to incur higher costs though if you decide to use out of network physicians and specialists. You are going to have a higher deductible along with higher expenses that will be out of pocket.

Make sure you understand all aspects of health insurance before choosing just one plan. One plan may be better for someone else and not the best for you. You should try to base your plan off of your health as well any procedures and medications that are used on a regular basis. Make sure to ask as many questions as possible so you understand fully what your new South Carolina health coverage is and what is has to offer.
